Make Believe - The Pink 7" (2004)

Side A: The Vampire's Lament To His Nurse
Side B: Each Day Is Different and The Same As Cocks

Label: Flameshovel Records
Matrix: DIG023
Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

Found this at Reckless Records in Chicago a little over a year ago. The B-side on this record is fantastic, Bobby Burg's vocal contribution for the chorus of this track is very fitting. And of course, Sam Zurick's guitar work on both sides of this release are simply incredible.

This record isn't a terrific way to introduce yourself with this particular Kinsella project, I would recommend checking out their self-titled EP or their first LP "Shock of Being" for a more proper introduction. Regardless of where you start, Make Believe is a very unappreciated project from these Chicago guys, and in my opinion Make Believe is exactly what Tim needed to do after the very poor album "Eventually, All At Once" by Joan of Arc.

Silkworm - Never Met A Man I Didn't Like (1996)

Side A: Never Met A Man I Didn't Like
Side B: You Ain't Going Nowhere

Label: Matador Records
Matrix: OLE 226-7
Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, V0 MP3

This is the first release I heard after Silkworm's brilliant LP "Firewater" (also on Matador). The A-side is a single from their then forthcoming record "Developer", which I might add is quite a weak album, this track is definitely the only one that really stands out.

The B-side is a definite throwaway for me. It is a Bob Dylan cover that features 4 verses. 3 of these verses are sung by different members of Silkworm and the 4th verse is sung by Stephen Malkmus (Pavement). I guess technically the B-Side is done by The Crust Brothers then...

When I moved to DeKalb in 2008, this 7" and the "Firewater" LP definitely got me through some hectic times.

Haberdasher - Quarry (1996)

Side A: Quarry
Side B: Day Two No Sleep

Label: Reptilian Records
Matrix: REP 014
Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, 320 kbps

One of the first blogs I followed years ago was Math & Noise (the last update was September 2010 unfortunately). This site introduced me to a plethora of great obscure bands; Blame Game, Mechakucha, Zs, Ahleuchatistas and Ativin to name a few.

The band that I was most excited to find was Haberdasher. Other than the post on Math & Noise there really isn't much information out there... 1/4 of this project went on to form 1/3 of Oxes. The first song is a little different than anything else I've heard from Haberdasher (this including their only full length). Much more aggressive, and has some Shellac like vocals. The second side features a track "reminiscent of the early 90's Louisville scene" that I'm familiar with.

This is a really great introduction to this band, think Slint meets Drive Like Jehu. If anyone is interested I'll rip the full length as well. Physical copies of this 7" are still available through Reptilian Records.

Seyarse - Seyarse (2002)

Side A: Remedial Learning / It Might Be A Setup

Side B: Fashion Emergency / Gypsy Switch

Label: Self-Released

Matrix: SR-001

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, 320 kbps

I found at the Corner Record Shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan on tour back in 2009. I wasn't familiar with any Seyarse material prior to purchasing this, but I was aware that 1/2 of this band went on to form 2/3 of Piglet. Other than Piglet and Seyarse sharing members, nothing about the two bands are very similar.

The back of the jacket (just like the insert) gives up no release information, so this could be an incredibly limited pressing. If I could sum these songs up, I would say think.... Lickgoldensky meets the urgency of Orchid?

Encoding: 48 kHz / 24 bit, 320 kbps
